I loved reading this, and thank you for sharing the links at the end! I especially loved the 18-minute featurette you shared. I don't remember watching the first film when I was younger, but I watched it on Netflix when the second film was released. For some reason, it always felt like Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire was on the mood board for Akeem and his dad's style in America. It's interesting to see it's from East African (Kenyan and Ethiopian) leaders.
